Putting my little corner on the map

December 6th, 2011

As an approved photographer for 360 cities, I’ve had all my submissions accepted, several of which have made it on to Google Earth… a lengthy process. Click the image below to go to my 360 cities page, or turn on the 360 cities layer in Google Earth and look around the Niagara Peninsula.

Panoramas from a trip to France

June 8th, 2011

I was in  France in May, shooting around Paris.  Pere Lachaise cemetery is  the resting place of many famous people from Chopin to Jim Morrison. Even on a sunny spring day in Paris, its an eerie experience. I decided not to take my bulky tripod and panoramic head, but instead shoot hand-held. This takes a steady hand using a plumb-bob and hot-shot bubble level,  a lot of retouching to deal with the inevitable stitching errors, and a certain amount of luck. The sound is by Reinsamba and is available from Freesound, except for the buzzing flies its close to how I remember it.

A website for A Cappella Niagara

May 11th, 2011

ACN is a fun group of guys that tour locally and compete in A Cappella competitions throughout North America. We had already produced an interactive panorama of one of their performances last year, and we were delighted when they came to us to help with their new website. It was important for them to be able to maintain the content themselves this time, so we set them up with a WordPress.org website

They are now working to secure rights to allow us to publish their performances on their website.

Virtual Tour for Freedom Oaks Golf Club

April 17th, 2011

With help from the Port Colborne Camera Club, we recently created interactive panoramas for all 18 holes at Freedom Oaks Golf Club in Dunnville, Ontario. In an intensive few days of shooting and processing we captured 360° views of each tee and green to give a sense of how the course played. You can see the seventh hole by clicking this picture.

This work was shot last summer. With the new golf season we’ve improved the virtual tour by adding a map navigation that reduces clicking.  This is under construction, with a few bugs to work out. Enjoy, comments are at the bottom if you have suggestions.

See it in context on their website here.

Photosynth

March 4th, 2011

Although we use advanced tools to produce and publish our panoramas to the web, we’ve been experimenting with Microsoft ICE and Photosynth. These are totally free, although you will be required to download a browser plugin for your PC or Mac. The results are impressive. I stitched some of my early work and the results were almost flawless. Geotagging, your Synth on Bing maps, highlights and a clean interface. Something else to consider for your business presence on the web. Here’s an example.

Interactive Panoramas on Mobile Devices

October 16th, 2010

Adobe Flash is used extensively to deliver rich interactive web content on laptop and desktop computers. However, iPhones and iPads have limited Flash capabilities, and only for applications purchased from the Apple store.  There are an estimated 70 million iPhones sold, so to reach this market, its important to publish electronic information these devices can display.

We create panoramas that can detect the device being used and deliver the appropriate content: Flash for Laptops and Desktop computers, html5/Javascript for Apple mobile devices.

To appreciate what’s happening, click the iPhone thumbnail both on your Apple mobile device and on your main computer.
